Tall Ships, Modern Comforts: Sailing Cruises That Blend Romance with Real Luxury

I learned the hard way that sailing isn't for everyone. My first multi-day trip—a bareboat charter in Tahiti—sounded dreamy. My husband loved the wind and the endless blue. I hated the cramped quarters on that 42-foot sloop and got bored fast.

Then something surprising happened: I fell for sailing cruises. The bigger ships have room to breathe. Plenty of deck space. Comfortable cabins. Stability. And a crew that handles the sails, cooks the filet mignon, and pours the Champagne. With strong Wi-Fi, I never run out of reading material.

For travelers like me who want the romance of a tall ship without roughing it, a growing number of lines now offer sail-assisted vessels. These ships use engines to keep schedules and sails for ambiance and fuel savings. Some are sleek modern yachts. Others are full-rigged classics that look straight out of a swashbuckler film.

Among the standout options: Orient Express Sailing Yachts just launched the Corinthian, the world's largest sailing yacht at 722 feet, with just 54 suites and Michelin-starred dining. Windstar Cruises offers three Wind Class ships that blend sailing with yacht-like ease, including the 342-passenger Wind Surf. Atlas Ocean Voyages will debut a 400-passenger sailing ship in 2028 with carbon-fiber sails that cut fuel use by 40 percent. Ponant's Le Ponant carries only 32 guests, offering an intimate, private-yacht feel in the Caribbean and Mediterranean.

For purists who want real sailing—canvas and crew hauling lines by hand—Star Clippers invites guests to help hoist sails or just nap in the bowsprit netting. Sea Cloud Cruises operates two elegant sisters with teak decks, outdoor dining, and the chance to climb the rigging. And the Maine Windjammer Fleet delivers a classic, no-frills experience with fresh lobster dinners and starlit evenings.

Whether you want a pool and a spa or the thrill of square-rigged sails, there's a ship that delivers the romance without the sacrifice.
