RIA NovostiFriday, August 7, 2026

Turkish gendarmerie have detained a suspect in a series of thefts targeting vacationers in Kusadasi, according to the Turizmnews portal. The 47-year-old, identified only as T.O., was caught red-handed during a carefully planned operation after a week of bag snatching in the Guzelcamli area.

Following complaints from victims, gendarmerie launched an investigation and identified the suspect. He was arrested as he tried to commit another theft. Recovered stolen property was worth nearly 3.85 million lira, or about $82,000.

Searches of a cache and his car uncovered six latest-model iPhones, electronics worth around 700,000 lira ($15,000), gold jewelry worth 900,000 lira ($19,000), and foreign currency totaling 1.75 million lira ($37,000). A fake military ID, a hunting rifle, a sword, and several knives were also found, which investigators believe may have been used in the crimes. The suspect was later taken to court and ordered held in custody.
