Summer Travel Alert: Scam Reports Surge in Turkey as Peak Season Arrives

As Turkey’s summer tourism season heats up, travel industry insiders are warning visitors to be on high alert for a wave of booking fraud, especially when renting bungalows. Akın Beke, a tour operator based in Bodrum and a member of the Turkish Association of Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB), told RIA Novosti that complaints about vacation scams have jumped sharply in recent weeks. The biggest red flag, he says, is fake accommodation listings that disappear after taking a deposit.

“Scammers get far more active during the high season,” Beke explained. “Tourists are most often tricked by phony rental ads, paying upfront and then losing all contact with the so-called owner.” He urges travelers to stick with verified booking platforms and licensed travel companies. Beyond bungalow rentals, common complaints include hotels that claim no record of a paid reservation, last-minute room downgrades, surprise fees at check-in, and difficulty getting refunds. Car rental scams are also on the rise, with fake listings and deposit disputes leaving many visitors stranded.

The numbers paint a worrying picture. According to the Turkish complaints platform Şikayetvar, reports of bungalow rental fraud have soared 114% in the past week alone. Complaints about chain hotels rose 58%, car rental scams jumped 46%, hotel booking site fraud increased 45%, and intercity bus service complaints climbed 23%. For travelers planning a trip to Turkey this summer, the advice is simple: verify before you pay.
