Stranded in Vietnam: A Dream Vacation Turns Into a Two-Month Ordeal

A 21-year-old Russian tourist from Kaliningrad spent two months homeless in Vietnam after a romantic getaway went disastrously wrong. The story, first reported by the Telegram channel Baza, serves as a stark warning about the vulnerabilities of travel and trust.

Maria met a man 17 years her senior who invited her to celebrate the New Year in Nha Trang. She accepted, but the trip quickly soured. Her companion began drinking heavily, leading to a fight on New Year's Eve. He then abandoned her in the coastal city, leaving her with no money and nowhere to stay.

Stranded, Maria contacted her family, but they couldn't gather the funds for a return ticket. For weeks, she slept on the streets and relied on handouts from other Russian-speaking tourists. Her situation worsened as her visa expired, compounding her legal troubles.

Her ordeal only ended in late February when Russian volunteers found her and placed her in a shelter for the homeless. Now, she faces not only the cost of a flight home but also fines and expenses for her deportation. A fundraiser is ongoing to cover these costs.

Maria told volunteers that upon returning to Russia, she plans to enroll in university. Her goal is to achieve the financial independence that would prevent her from ever finding herself in such a desperate situation again. Her case highlights the precarious position travelers can find themselves in when personal relationships fracture abroad, far from any safety net.
