Stranded in Dubai: Independent Traveler Says Airlines Prioritize Package Tours Amid Regional Crisis

RIA NovostiFriday, March 6, 2026

SARATOV, March 6 – Anna, a tourist from Moscow, finds herself stranded in Dubai with no clear way home. Her flight back to Russia, originally scheduled for March 3, has been repeatedly canceled and is now postponed a staggering 17 days to March 23—a decision made without her consent.

Speaking to RIA Novosti, Anna described a frustrating scene at the airport. She arrived for a rescheduled flight on Friday, only to discover that airlines were boarding only passengers who had arrived on package tours. Independent travelers like herself, she says, are being pushed to the back of the line.

"We are extending our hotel stay at our own expense, but we are being deprioritized," Anna stated. "This is unacceptable. We are asking to be flown anywhere in Russia."

The situation is compounded by airline policy. Refunds for canceled tickets are being issued only as vouchers, not cash, leaving travelers with limited options. "We don't know what to do. At all," she added.

The massive flight disruptions and airspace closures across the Middle East follow a sharp escalation of regional hostilities. On February 28, the United States and Israel conducted strikes on targets within Iran, including near Tehran, with reports of civilian casualties. Iran responded with missile strikes against Israeli territory and U.S. military assets in the region. The ensuing closure of airspace by most regional aviation authorities has created a logistical nightmare for carriers and passengers alike, with independent travelers seemingly bearing the brunt of the chaos.
