Stranded at Sea: Russian Mother and Son Find Refuge on Cruise Ship Amid Regional Unrest

For Nadya Lesnikova from Chelyabinsk, a dream cruise vacation has become an indefinite stay aboard the Celestyal Journey, currently anchored in Qatari waters. The vessel, like many others, has been immobilized due to the ongoing Middle East conflict, leaving passengers scrambling. While most of the roughly 200 Russian tourists were instructed to disembark by March 7, Lesnikova and her ten-year-old son have been granted permission to remain.

The decision came after the Russian Embassy in Qatar intervened, negotiating directly with the ship's management. A small group of passengers will now stay past the deadline, with the cruise line committed to providing food and beverages. Lesnikova, who has been on the ship since February 28, explained her choice. "For now, my decision is to stay. I have my child with me, and I have two more children waiting at home. I'm not ready to take independent risks," she told RIA Novosti.

Many fellow travelers opted for the complex overland route home, boarding buses bound for Saudi Arabia. For Lesnikova, the prohibitive cost of last-minute airfare—approximately 250,000 rubles for two tickets to Moscow—solidified her resolve. The ship, once a hub of vacation activity, now serves as an unexpected sanctuary for a mother prioritizing her family's safety above all else, as the world outside the harbor remains uncertain.
