Stranded at Sea: Russian Cruise Passengers Finally Reach Home After Mid-East Turmoil

YEKATERINBURG – After two tense weeks, a group of Russian tourists, including a mother and son from Chelyabinsk, are finally home. Their vacation aboard the Celestyal Journey cruise ship turned into an unexpected ordeal when military strikes across the Middle East left them stranded in the port of Doha, Qatar.

Nadezhda Lesnikova and her ten-year-old son boarded the liner in Dubai on February 23 for what should have been a week-long voyage. Instead, on February 28, their ship was caught in Doha as hostilities erupted between the United States, Israel, and Iran. With air travel across the region severely disrupted, the roughly 200 Russian passengers on board were unable to leave.

"We are home," Lesnikova told reporters upon her arrival in Yekaterinburg on Wednesday. Her journey back involved a bus transfer from Doha to Dubai on March 8, followed by a scramble to rebook flights. She was among six tourists from Chelyabinsk who waited several days in the UAE for a flight out.

The broader conflict, which saw strikes on Tehran and Israeli territory, has paralyzed key travel hubs. For the passengers of the Celestyal Journey, a simple return from holiday became a complex evacuation, ending only when their plane touched down on Russian soil.
