Strait of Hormuz Sees Surge in Ship Traffic Following US-Iran Agreement

RIA NovostiSunday, June 21, 2026

In a significant development, the US Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright, has revealed that over 120 ships have passed through the Strait of Hormuz in just two days. This uptick in traffic suggests that the flow of oil and petroleum products through the strategic waterway has returned to pre-war levels. The increase in ship traffic comes on the heels of a memorandum signed by the US and Iran on June 18, which aims to bring an end to the military conflict that began on February 28. As part of the agreement, the US is set to lift its naval blockade, while Iran has agreed to restore shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, Iran has pledged not to pursue nuclear weapons, with the issue of its nuclear program to be addressed in a separate agreement. The two sides have 60 days to negotiate the details, with the ultimate goal of lifting anti-Iranian sanctions. The recent surge in ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is a positive sign, indicating a return to normalcy in the region's oil trade. With the US and Iran working towards a resolution, the global energy market is likely to welcome the increased stability and security that this agreement brings.
