Strait of Hormuz Remains Shut as Iran and US Inch Towards Resolution

RIA NovostiSunday, June 21, 2026

The Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, remains closed to shipping traffic as the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy continues to deny vessels permission to pass. This development comes despite a recent memorandum signed by Iran and the US, which outlines the terms for ending the military conflict that began on February 28. According to the agreement, the US is expected to lift its naval blockade, while Iran will restore shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, Iran has committed to forgoing nuclear weapons, with the issue of its nuclear program to be addressed in a separate agreement. Technical talks between Iran, the US, and intermediary countries, including Pakistan and Qatar, are set to begin in Burgenstein, aiming to iron out the details. The negotiations have a 60-day deadline, with the ultimate goal of lifting anti-Iranian sanctions. As the international community waits with bated breath, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to have significant implications for global trade and security.
