Storm Austen Leaves 10,000+ Without Power as Storm Boelo Looms

More than 10,000 homes across southern England and Wales remain without power as Storm Austen, the season's first named storm, continues to cause disruption.

Gusts reached 84mph in Jersey, with fallen trees blocking railway lines and roads across southern England. In Brighton, part of the abandoned West Pier-which first opened in 1866-collapsed into the sea as large waves pounded the structure.

Schools on Jersey and Guernsey closed, and families were evacuated from a holiday park in Perranporth, Cornwall, ahead of the worst weather. The National Grid said engineers had restored power to more than 60,000 properties since the storm began.

Forecasters warn Storm Boelo will bring further strong winds and heavy rain this weekend, with an amber warning covering parts of Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland. Train operators have warned of likely disruption.
