Sri Lanka Travel Alert: Russian Embassy Warns Tourists Against Plant Collection

Russian tourists traveling to Sri Lanka have been warned against collecting plants and animals by the Russian Embassy in Colombo. According to Alexander Ivin, the head of the consular department, such actions can cause harm to the environment and are considered serious criminal offenses. If caught, tourists may face a lengthy investigation, lasting over a year and a half, and potentially severe penalties, including substantial fines or imprisonment. Ivin emphasized that the risk of damaging or destroying rare endemic species is high, and the consequences of such actions would be severe. The embassy's warning is aimed at protecting both the environment and Russian tourists from the risks associated with collecting local flora and fauna. With the potential for significant fines, measured in tens of thousands of dollars, or lengthy prison sentences, the Russian Embassy is urging tourists to exercise caution and respect Sri Lanka's unique ecosystem during their visit.
