Spirit Airlines Shuts Down, Leaving Travelers Stranded and Politicians Pointing Fingers

The sudden collapse of Spirit Airlines over the weekend has left thousands of passengers scrambling and sparked a heated political blame game. The low-cost carrier, known for its bright yellow planes and no-frills fares, ceased operations early Saturday after 34 years in the sky, posting on its website that it had “started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately.”

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy urged anyone with a Spirit booking not to go to the airport. “There will be no one here to assist you,” he warned, announcing measures for customers to get refunds or find discounted seats on other airlines. At Orlando International Airport, departure screens flashed red cancellation notices. Spirit’s last flight touched down in Dallas after midnight, and check-in counters sat empty nationwide.

CEO Dave Davis told the Wall Street Journal the company didn’t intend to leave travelers hanging. “We didn’t intentionally sell any tickets thinking we weren’t going to be here,” he said. But for many, the damage is done. Angela Moreno, booked to fly from Fort Lauderdale to Nashville for a wedding, told NBC News the family is scattered. “There’s many people who cannot attend the wedding as of now,” she said, noting that alternative flights cost $600.

Politicians quickly traded blame. Republicans pointed to the Biden administration’s decision to block a $3.8 billion sale to JetBlue, which a federal court halted in 2024 over competition concerns. “That block and high fuel prices have led to Spirit’s demise,” said Representative Thomas Massie. Senator Elizabeth Warren fired back, blaming “spiking fuel prices from Trump’s war” and noting the judge who blocked the merger was appointed by Ronald Reagan.

Duffy dismissed the war in Iran as a factor, saying Spirit was “in dire straits long before.” Talks for a government bailout collapsed when creditors—including Citadel LLC and Ares Management—opposed a plan giving the government a 90% stake in exchange for $500 million. They urged the board to wind down.

Spirit had around 4,000 domestic flights scheduled through May 15, according to Cirium. For many travelers and employees, the loss is personal. A Spirit pilot from Las Vegas wrote on Reddit: “To shut down forever tonight has been one of the saddest experiences of my life.”
