Spain Travel Alert: Lawyer Advises Russians on Hantavirus Precautions

With a deadly hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship that docked in Tenerife, a Russian immigration lawyer is urging travelers to upgrade their travel insurance before heading to Spain. Anastasia Lavra, an expert in immigration law, told RIA Novosti that tourists should stop buying the cheapest policies just to meet Schengen visa requirements. She recommends investing in a comprehensive medical plan, including the basic coverage offered by Russian banks, which can provide real protection in an emergency.
Lavra also suggests booking hotels with flexible cancellation or pay-later options, even if they cost a bit more. “It’s really just inexpensive insurance against any unexpected events, not just epidemics,” she said. She advises travelers to monitor official updates from the World Health Organization, Spain’s Ministry of Health, and the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The outbreak occurred on the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius, which was sailing from Argentina to Cape Verde. Three people died. The vessel arrived off the Canary Islands on May 10, where passengers were evacuated. The crew then continued to Rotterdam. As authorities investigate, Lavra’s message is clear: don’t cut corners on insurance, and stay flexible with your bookings.
