South Korea Through Russian Eyes: ‘A Russian Girl Isn’t Ready for This’

A Russian travel blogger has sparked conversation after describing South Korea as a place “a Russian girl isn’t ready for.” Sharing her experiences on the platform Zen under the blog name “Valeri Light,” she painted a vivid picture of a society where appearance is everything.
According to the blogger, pressure to look a certain way starts early. Children learn from school age what the Korean beauty standard considers attractive—and what it doesn’t. Cosmetic surgery is so normalized that South Korea ranks among the world’s leaders in procedures per capita. She recalled a conversation with a woman at a café who proudly mentioned having eyelid surgery two years ago, calling it the best decision of her life. Then she asked the blogger if she’d ever considered a nose job. “I stood there with my coffee cup, not knowing what to say,” the Russian wrote.
Men’s grooming is also a major part of daily life. South Korea has one of the largest markets for male cosmetics globally, the blogger noted. Many local men wear concealer, foundation, and skincare products. They also keep up with manicures, trendy haircuts, and stylish clothing. “Honestly, I really liked it. It just took me a couple of days to get used to,” she admitted.
In a previous post, the same blogger described how Filipinas view Russian men as “exotic,” noting that they are attracted to the image of a “strong northern man.” But in South Korea, she found the beauty culture far more intense—and far less familiar.
