Sochi's Unwritten Rules: A Local's Guide to Respectful Tourism

A Russian travel blogger, Elena Liseykina, recently shared some valuable insights from a friend who made the move from Moscow to Sochi 10 years ago. The friend's advice, posted on Liseykina's blog 'Traveling with a Camera', highlights the unwritten rules of behavior for tourists in Sochi. One habit that's considered particularly disrespectful is reserving beach loungers with towels and then leaving them unattended for hours. According to Liseykina, this not only takes up valuable space but also shows a lack of consideration for other beachgoers and locals. Another common complaint is the loud music blasting from portable speakers, which can be a nuisance to those nearby. Liseykina's friend also offered some practical tips for tourists, such as showering after a swim, not burying trash in the sand, and not haggling too aggressively. Additionally, she advised against leaving children unattended near the water, taking photos of people without permission, and feeding seagulls. By being mindful of these unwritten rules, tourists can help create a more enjoyable and respectful atmosphere for everyone in Sochi, whether they're visiting for a week or living there year-round. Liseykina's friend concluded that when people make an effort to be considerate of one another, the overall vacation experience is improved for all. This isn't the first time Liseykina has shared her expertise on how to make the most of a trip to a Russian resort town. Previously, she offered advice on how to avoid overspending at domestic resorts, including using free beach loungers when ordering from a cafe.
