Smolensk Region Revamps Historic Sites Under Tourism Initiative
Governor Vasily Anokhin reported significant upgrades to several tourist destinations in Smolensk last year as part of the national "Tourism and Hospitality" project. Speaking at a regional government meeting, he highlighted the completion of work on the eastern section of the Smolensk fortress wall, which now features paved walkways, modern seating areas with benches and swings, and informational displays. The historic site has been transformed into a welcoming spot for family strolls and relaxation.
In the town of Vyazma, major improvements focused on the tourist center, where the embankment and central public spaces were renovated. New benches, trash bins, pergolas, lounge chairs, sunbeds, and flower boxes were installed. A state-of-the-art stage complex was also purchased to host more cultural events and festivals. Meanwhile, in Khislavichi, which is preparing to celebrate its 500th anniversary, new market stalls were set up and the bus ticket office building was modernized. The memorial complex "Solovyova Pereprava" in Kardymovsky District received repairs and landscaping upgrades.
The Gnezdovo Museum-Reserve underwent a large-scale infrastructure overhaul, adding new recreational zones, a ticket booth, museum and educational spaces, a café, a tent camp, a children's playground, and an observation deck. The area now has modern lighting, a music broadcast system, signage, bike racks, art installations, and security features. In the Smolenskoye Poozerye National Park, hiking trails and rest areas were improved, with new information boards installed.
Work continues this year. In Roslavl, sites near the monument to Prince Rostislav, the T-34 tank memorial, and Burtseva Gora park are being upgraded. Vyazma is further renovating its tourist center, with architectural lighting added to the Palace of Culture on Sovetskaya Square and the area around the Lenin monument being spruced up for new public events. The governor noted that local businesses are also boosting tourism potential through an annual regional grant competition, funding fresh tourism projects and events.
