Sicily's Taormina Film Festival Rolls Out Red Carpet for Hollywood Heavyweights and Indie Darlings

Just days after Dua Lipa and Callum Turner wrapped their star-studded wedding weekend in Palermo, the spotlight shifts eastward. Sicily’s Taormina Film Festival returns for its 72nd edition from June 10 to 14, and the guest list reads like a who’s who of cinema royalty.
Set in the cliffside town made famous by “The White Lotus” season two, the festival blends glitzy open-air galas with a competitive arthouse lineup. Among the expected arrivals: Helen Mirren, Russell Crowe, Clive Owen, Miles Teller, Jane Campion, and Holly Hunter. They’ll be joined by Italian legends Giancarlo Giannini, Franco Nero, and Michele Placido, each receiving career honors.
Opening night kicks off Wednesday in the Ancient Greek Amphitheater with a preview of HBO’s “House of the Dragon” season three. Cast members Steve Toussaint, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Harry Collett will walk the red carpet. That same evening, Emile Hirsch picks up an international award and debuts an art exhibition in town.
Mirren receives a Lifetime Achievement Award on Friday at a gala honoring Italian icon Anna Magnani, with a restored screening of “Bellissima.” Crowe gets his International Achievement Award ahead of the world premiere of “Bear Country,” an action thriller co-starring Nina Dobrev and Aaron Paul.
Artistic director Tiziana Rocca, back at the helm after years of political turmoil, has reinstated the International Competition. Ten features vie for top honors, including Japanese horror “Erica” and Turkish drama “Hear the Yellow.” Jane Campion heads the jury, joined by Hunter, casting director Francine Maisler, and others.
Side events include a Thursday panel, “Women Beyond the Gaze,” featuring Campion, Hunter, and Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres. With its mix of Hollywood wattage and serious cinema, Taormina is once again a summer destination that matters.
