Shaun White on the Aspen Epiphany That Redefined His Life After Competition

For Shaun White, a pre-Olympic training trip to Aspen in 2018 became more than just preparation; it was a blueprint for living. While practicing for PyeongChang, he stayed with friends who embodied a disciplined yet vibrant local ethos. They were not ski bums, but driven individuals who seamlessly blended intense physical activity with focused professional work.
Their routine was revelatory: predawn ascents up silent, untouched peaks, the first run down in the morning's alpine glow, followed by coffee and hours of work. Lunch at the White House Tavern was a brief respite before returning to the slopes. His friends unlocked a deeper layer of Aspen, using snowmobiles to access vast backcountry terrain beyond the standard lifts. 'It was magical to see what the locals see,' White recalls, describing incredible laps in that exclusive space.
That immersion—the balance of wellness, ambition, and pure enjoyment, capped by vibrant evenings celebrating the sport's culture—crystallized a new philosophy for him. 'I was just like, Oh, wow. This is how I want to live my life,' he says. Now retired from competition, White fully embraces that Aspen-inspired rhythm.
He remains deeply connected to the snow sports world. White will serve as a commentator for NBC's coverage of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony on February 6. Furthermore, his own snow league is set for its next event at Buttermilk at Aspen Snowmass on February 27 and 28, bringing his vision for the sport's future back to the mountains that helped shape his own.
