Shark Attack Strands Russian Voyagers; Embassy Steps In to Help

When a pair of Russian sailors set out on a round-the-world voyage, they didn’t expect their biggest challenge to come from sharks. But in September 2023, their inflatable catamaran was attacked by sharks some 835 kilometers off Australia’s coast, forcing an emergency evacuation. The crew—participants in the Russian Geographical Society’s “Following the Path of Russian Seafarers” project—were rescued by local authorities and brought to safety.
What happened next was a two-month effort by the Russian Embassy in Canberra, the consulate, and members of the Russian-speaking community to get the travelers back on their feet. Ambassador Mikhail Petrakov told RIA Novosti that the embassy helped find a replacement vessel so the expedition could continue. During their extended stay, the travelers also gave more than a dozen educational talks at schools, clubs, and churches across major Australian cities.
But that wasn’t the only unusual request. In February 2026, the embassy assisted Russian ultra-marathon runner and climber Nikolai Konyukhov during his participation in the Australia Alpine Ascent ultra-marathon, where he represented Russian athletes and students. For the embassy, these cases highlight the unexpected ways diplomacy can play out—far from the usual paperwork and protocol.
