Search Intensifies for Snowmobile Tourists Missing on Remote Ural Plateau
PERM REGION, March 1 – A local guide assisting in the search for five missing snowmobile tourists suggests a sudden, severe storm on the remote Kvarkush Plateau may have disoriented the group, leading them off course.
The tourists, who arrived from Ufa to the village of Zolotanka on February 20, set out for the plateau approximately 100 kilometers away. They were expected back last Tuesday but never returned, prompting an ongoing search and rescue operation.
"With a likely large fuel supply, they could have changed their route and gone almost anywhere," said Artem Ivanov, a guide familiar with the terrain. "The worst-case scenario is that they are up on the plateau itself."
Ivanov described how conditions can deteriorate rapidly in the area. "The wind picks up, the snow starts blowing horizontally. You lose all visibility and any sense of direction—the horizon disappears, left and right become meaningless," he explained. He added that if the group separated for any reason, regrouping would be extremely difficult.
The guide’s theory is informed by personal experience. He was leading another group on the plateau on February 21 and encountered a similar storm. "It’s an unpleasant sensation, and for unprepared people, it can cause real problems. That kind of weather event could have been the starting point for their troubles. I’m just putting the weather conditions and their disappearance together," Ivanov stated.
Search teams are now focusing on the vast, exposed plateau as a primary area of concern.
