Scottish Soccer Fans Drain Boston’s Beer Supply in Victory Celebration

Boston bars are still recovering after Scottish national team supporters descended on the city to celebrate their World Cup opening win. The fans, known as the “Tartan Army,” turned the historic streets into a rolling pub crawl last weekend, leaving a trail of empty kegs and astonished bartenders in their wake. According to NBC, the celebration was so intense that several establishments ran out of beer entirely.

One bar owner told reporters that between Thursday and Sunday, Scottish fans downed four times the amount of beer typically sold during a four-day holiday weekend. The sudden surge forced him to arrange emergency deliveries just to keep glasses full. “We’ve been here more than 30 years and never seen anything like it,” a manager told the Boston Globe. He compared the beer consumption to three St. Patrick’s Days rolled into one.

The frenzy followed Scotland’s victory over Haiti, which sparked a victory lap through restaurants and pubs across the city. For Boston’s hospitality workers, it was a memorable—if exhausting—weekend. The Tartan Army may have moved on, but local bars are still restocking their coolers.
