Russians Surge to Second Place in Maldives Tourism, Overtaking Europe

Russian travelers are flocking to the Maldives in record numbers, now ranking second only to China among visitors to the Indian Ocean paradise, according to the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR). The shift marks a significant change in global travel patterns, with Russians outpacing European tourists at the luxury destination.

In 2025, the Maldives welcomed 278,700 Russian visitors. But the pace has only quickened: during the first half of 2026, 162,300 Russians arrived—a 14.5 percent jump compared to the same period in 2025. The steady climb is narrowing the gap with China, which leads with 187,000 tourists in the first six months of 2026.

The trend mirrors a similar development in the Seychelles, where Russians recently overtook Europeans as the top visitor group. For Maldives resort operators, the influx of Russian guests—many drawn by direct flights and visa-free entry—has helped offset a slower recovery from other markets. As the numbers rise, the Maldives solidifies its reputation as a favorite getaway for affluent travelers.
