Russians' Most Popular Cruise Routes Named: Moscow–St Petersburg and Golden Ring

River cruises have become a high-demand travel option among Russians, with routes between Moscow and St Petersburg and through Golden Ring cities the most popular, shipping companies told RIA Novosti.
Deputy CEO of Vodohod Ilya Sukhovolsky said annual tourist growth has averaged 10–15% since 2020, making river cruise holidays one of Russia's fastest-growing travel segments. He explained that travellers have shifted away from passive beach-hotel stays toward unique experiences and emotionally rich journeys.
Vodohod reports an average occupancy of 85% and expects to welcome more than 150,000 guests in 2026. Domestic demand is only slightly higher than last year, he noted.
Moscow River Shipping Company said traditional demand remains strong for Moscow–St Petersburg, Moscow–Kazan, Golden Ring and weekend cruises. One-way trips have sold actively thanks to convenient transport links between major cities. Week-long tours are also popular, and this summer the company saw growing demand for Perm and the Solovki Islands. Long cruises are usually booked well in advance, while weekend cruises are often purchased one or two days before departure.
Sukhovolsky also pointed to expedition cruises as a key trend, including routes along the Yenisei and expedition trips to Lake Baikal and the Far East. He said travellers are increasingly drawn to distant, unusual itineraries, with more interest in exploring Russia itself.
