Russians Leaving Turkey: A Shift in Lifestyle and Migration Policies

Turkey has seen a notable exodus of Russian residents, with Russia ranking among the top three countries whose citizens are leaving the country. According to Turkish sociologist Ilknur Yilmaz, this trend is largely driven by socio-economic factors, rather than political ones. The rising cost of living in Turkey has made it less appealing for some Russians to stay, with many opting to return to Russia or relocate to other countries. Yilmaz notes that the significant increase in expenses, such as rent, utilities, education, and everyday goods, has been particularly felt by foreigners living in Turkey on their own savings or remote income. Changes in Turkey's migration policy have also played a role, with stricter rules for obtaining and renewing residence permits prompting some Russians to reconsider their long-term plans. Additionally, restrictions in the banking sector and international transactions have created further complications for foreign residents. Despite this, Yilmaz emphasizes that there is no mass exodus of Russians from Turkey, and the Russian diaspora remains one of the largest in the country, with significant communities in cities like Antalya, Alanya, and Istanbul. The shift in lifestyle and migration policies has simply led to a readjustment of plans for some Russians, rather than a wholesale departure.
