Russians Flock to Dagestan, Altai, Karelia, and Lake Baikal for Domestic Getaways

New data reveals a clear shift in where Russians are choosing to vacation within their own country. According to 2026 booking figures from KupiBilet, shared with Lenta.ru, the republics of Dagestan and Altai, the region of Karelia, and Lake Baikal have surged in popularity. The trend underscores a growing preference for immersive domestic travel, with 26 percent of citizens planning such trips this year as a regular part of their lives, not as one-off excursions.

The appeal lies in seeking out profound natural beauty and authentic local culture. Dagestan leads the charge, with demand skyrocketing by 30 percent compared to 2025. Travelers are increasingly drawn to Altai for the stunning Teletskoye Lake, mountain valleys, and the famed Chuisky Trakt highway. Karelia attracts visitors with the Kivach waterfall, the Ladoga skerries, and the historic wooden architecture of Kizhi Island.

Even a perennial favorite like Lake Baikal is seeing a change, as tourists move beyond classic routes like Olkhon Island to explore lesser-known areas. Across these four destinations, bookings have increased by 15 to 20 percent. This movement signals a broader exploration of Russia's diverse regions, as travelers look for experiences closer to home that offer both grandeur and a genuine sense of place.
