Russian Watchdog Warns Airports Against Holiday Price Gouging

Russia's Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) has issued a stern warning to businesses operating in and around the nation's airports. The agency stated that while temporary flight restrictions can cause a short-term spike in demand for food, goods, and hotel rooms, this is not an excuse for unjustified price increases.
'Restrictions should not lead to an unreasonable rise in the cost of goods and services at airports or in adjacent areas,' the FAS press service emphasized. The watchdog promised to take action if necessary, noting it has already communicated its position to major associations representing restaurants and hotels.
The warning follows recent enforcement actions. The FAS has already initiated four cases and issued one formal warning over pricing in airport security zones where passengers are prohibited from carrying their own beverages. In a related move, 42 airports have followed the agency's recommendation to install free water coolers in these areas.
This airport-specific alert comes as the FAS also urges major retail chains across Russia to maintain responsible pricing ahead of the upcoming May holiday period, signaling a broader focus on consumer protection during travel disruptions.
