Russian Travelers Trade Sunbeds for History in Turkey, Agent Reports

Russian tourists are increasingly swapping Turkey’s beach resorts for its ancient ruins and mountain plateaus, according to travel agent Deniz Şeker. Speaking to RIA Novosti, Şeker noted a clear shift from the classic “sea-sand-sun” package toward cultural and educational trips that explore the country’s history, cuisine, and natural wonders. “More Russian travelers want to get to know the regions, not just lie on the sand,” she said.

Booking data from operator Coral Travel shows demand for tours in Lycia and the Black Sea region jumped more than 40% this summer compared to last year. Interest in cultural trips to Cyprus has tripled. Top draws include Lycia’s Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, the Saklıkent Canyon and Dalyan, along with eastern Black Sea routes through Uzungöl, the Aider Plateau, Zilkale and even across the border to Batumi, Georgia.

The trend reflects a broader rise in “experience tourism” across Turkey, where visitors seek out heritage sites, local food and nature over traditional coastal holidays. With groups filling fast, Şeker and other operators advise booking well ahead. “Places are going quickly,” she warned, urging travelers to plan early for the 2026 summer season.
