Russian Travelers Tighten Belts, Shift to Last-Minute Bookings, Says ATOR Chief

Russian tourists are changing their vacation habits this year, opting for cheaper hotels and cutting back on excursions and transfers, according to Maya Lomidze, head of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR). Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2026, Lomidze noted a marked shift from the previous "go big or go home" approach to a more cautious, budget-conscious mindset.

The biggest change? Booking windows have shrunk dramatically. Lomidze said travelers now typically reserve trips just one to one-and-a-half months in advance, down from three to six months last year. Many are holding out for last-minute deals—so-called "hot tours." While some bargains have appeared, Lomidze warned that relying on this strategy is risky. "The chances of prices jumping at the last moment are higher than the odds of snagging a hot deal," she said.

Looking ahead to 2026, the industry expects a rise in road trips, with more families driving to nearby regions in their own cars. ATOR also predicts a jump in independent travelers who arrange their own itineraries rather than booking through agencies.

SPIEF 2026 runs from June 3 to 6, with RIA Novosti serving as the forum's general information partner.
