Russian Travelers Swap Beaches for Monasteries and Village Life

Russian tourists are rediscovering their own country in surprising ways, trading traditional beach vacations for trips to monasteries and remote villages. According to Maya Lomidze, head of the Russian Association of Tour Operators, these new trends are reshaping domestic travel.

Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Lomidze noted a growing interest in what she calls “monasterying” and “izbing” — journeys centered on visiting monasteries or staying in isolated rural homes. Travelers are seeking quiet, spiritual experiences far from crowded resorts.

Beyond religious tourism, visitors are flocking to small towns for hands-on workshops in traditional crafts. They want to learn old trades like pottery or weaving, not just sightsee. “Or they might join in an apple harvest — that’s agritourism,” Lomidze explained.

The shift reflects a broader desire for authentic, immersive experiences. Instead of booking package deals abroad, Russians are exploring their own heritage, from ancient monasteries to farm stays. Tour operators report rising demand for these niche trips, which combine cultural education with rural tranquility.

As the tourism industry adapts, expect more options for those looking to slow down and connect with local traditions. The appeal, it seems, lies in escaping the ordinary and finding meaning in the simple rhythms of village and monastic life.
