Russian Travelers Shift Gears: More Flights Abroad, Fewer Domestic Trips

New data from Aeroflot reveals a significant shift in Russian travel habits during the first half of 2026. The airline’s operational figures show that passengers are increasingly choosing international destinations over domestic routes, marking a clear departure from recent trends.
In June alone, Aeroflot’s international passenger traffic surged 20 percent compared to the same month last year. Over the full six-month period, that increase hit 16.8 percent. Flight occupancy also climbed to a record 91 percent in June—one of the highest rates the carrier has seen in years. The numbers suggest a strong rebound in overseas travel demand.
Meanwhile, domestic travel is taking a hit. June saw a 15 percent drop in passengers flying within Russia, and the first half of 2026 overall recorded a 7.2 percent decline. The data points to a growing preference for foreign vacations, even as the cost of living and currency fluctuations continue to influence choices. Earlier reports identified Turkey as the most affordable international destination for Russians, while France topped the list as the priciest option.
