Russian Travelers Flock to China as Air Traffic Surges

Air travel between Russia and China has seen a dramatic increase, with passenger numbers more than doubling in the first five months of 2026. According to the Russian Ministry of Transport, over 900,000 people flew from Russia to China between January and May, marking a 48% rise compared to the same period last year.

The surge is largely attributed to the visa-free travel agreement between the two nations, which was introduced to boost tourism and business ties. Russians now need only a valid passport to enter China, making it easier than ever to visit. The trend shows no signs of slowing, as bilateral relations continue to strengthen.

In a move that further encourages travel, Russian and Chinese authorities have extended the visa-free regime through December 31, 2027. This extension is expected to sustain and even accelerate the growth in air traffic, benefiting airlines, travel agencies, and tourists alike. With streamlined border procedures, the route is becoming a favorite for leisure and business travelers.
