Russian Travel to Dominican Republic Holds Steady Amid Flight Hurdles

RIA NovostiSunday, April 12, 2026

Russian Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Alexey Seredin, reports that while tourist numbers have fallen from pre-2022 highs, a dedicated core of Russian travelers continues to choose the Caribbean nation. In an interview marking the anniversary of the Russian embassy's opening in Santo Domingo, Seredin estimated roughly 20,000 Russian tourists visited last year, a significant drop from the nearly 200,000 recorded in 2021. He attributed the decline primarily to logistical challenges, including the absence of direct flights. Despite this, Seredin noted that interest has stabilized since 2024, suggesting the destination's appeal extends beyond mere convenience. 'The Dominican Republic remains on the list of preferences for Russians in the Caribbean,' he said, indicating a lasting fondness for the country's beaches and culture. The ambassador highlighted ongoing efforts to restore direct air links, a move he believes would provide an immediate boost to tourism and broader ties. He described the Dominican Republic as a 'long-standing friend' and a promising partner in the region, with mutual interest in expanding trade, including Dominican medical equipment, rum, and cocoa to Russia. On safety, Seredin sought to reassure potential visitors, stating that major resort areas like Punta Cana are geographically distant from the border with Haiti and maintain robust security measures for tourists. He emphasized that standard travel precautions are advisable, but there is no specific elevated threat from the situation in neighboring Haiti within the tourist zones.
