Russian Tourists Warned: Know the Law Before You Go Abroad

Moscow — Thinking about a trip abroad? The Russian Foreign Ministry has a simple piece of advice for travelers: read up on the local laws before you pack your bags. Grigory Lukyantsev, director of the ministry’s department for multilateral human rights cooperation, told RIA Novosti that the top priority for any tourist should be following the national legislation of their destination.

“The main recommendation is to comply with the national legislation and to understand what actions could be considered offenses under the laws of the country you are visiting,” Lukyantsev said in an interview. He pointed out that every nation has its own legal quirks, and what might be perfectly acceptable in Russia could land a traveler in hot water elsewhere. From strict dress codes to bans on certain medications, the rules vary widely.

The diplomat stressed that respect is key. “You need to treat the laws of the country you are going to with respect,” he added. His comments come as summer travel season heats up, with more Russians heading to popular spots like Turkey, Thailand, and the UAE. The message is clear: a little homework before departure can save a lot of trouble with local police or customs officials. When in doubt, check the embassy’s website or ask your tour operator for guidance.
