Russian Tour Operators Report Zero Hantavirus Cases Among Travelers

RIA NovostiFriday, May 8, 2026

Russian tour operators have not recorded a single case of hantavirus infection among their clients, according to the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR). In a statement to RIA Novosti, ATOR emphasized that travelers booking trips through member agencies are directed to accommodation that has been vetted and certified by foreign authorities. These properties maintain high hygiene standards, making any contact with infected rodents extremely unlikely.

Hantaviruses are transmitted to humans through contact with rodents and can cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome or hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Yulia Alcheeva, director of Euroins Travel Insurance, an ATOR partner, confirmed that her company has never encountered a hantavirus claim from any insured traveler abroad. She attributed this to the rigorous sanitation and hygiene levels at resorts and excursion sites used by tour operators, where rodent populations are well-controlled.

This reassurance comes after the World Health Organization reported seven confirmed hantavirus cases on the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius, which sailed from Argentina to Cape Verde. Three passengers died, and one remains in intensive care in South Africa. ATOR noted that such incidents are rare and isolated, particularly in destinations served by reputable operators. For Russian travelers, the message is clear: standard vacation packages offer minimal risk, with industry safeguards in place to ensure a safe and healthy trip.
