Russian Retirees in Thailand: A Lesson in Living Life to the Fullest

A travel blogger recently met a Russian couple on a beach in Hua Hin, Thailand, and she couldn't stop smiling. Lyudmila and Vladimir, both pensioners, are part of a growing trend of Russian ‘winterers’ escaping the cold for warmer climates. The blogger, writing on the platform ‘Dzen,’ described them with one phrase: ‘They delighted me with their attitude toward life.’

The couple explained that every winter, they celebrate New Year with their children and grandchildren in Russia, then disappear until late March. ‘We spend the cold months in warm places,’ Lyudmila said. Over the years, they have explored Bali, Egypt, Turkey, and Vietnam, never staying idle. ‘We move more here than in Moscow,’ they added, describing mornings at the market for fresh fruit, afternoons swimming, and evening beach strolls.

The blogger was struck by their vitality. ‘They looked fantastic—lively, with bright eyes, cheerful, and kind. I didn’t dare ask their age, but they certainly weren’t 65-plus,’ she wrote. Curious about their secret, she asked how they afford such a lifestyle. The answer was simple: they own two apartments in Moscow, renting out one. Combined with two pensions and a knack for frugal living, they manage three months of winter travel and an annual autumn trip to their beloved Kislovodsk.

This story follows another blogger’s observation about European retirees, who embrace aging without hiding gray hair. But for Lyudmila and Vladimir, the lesson is clear: retirement isn’t about slowing down—it’s about savoring every season.
