Russian Health Expert Urges Caution on Exotic Travel Amid Ebola Outbreak

A prominent Russian health official is advising citizens to reconsider travel to certain tropical destinations, as concerns over the Ebola virus grow. Academician Gennady Onishchenko, vice president of the Russian Academy of Education, told RIA Novosti that the risks are too high to ignore.
Onishchenko pointed to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, which the World Health Organization has already labeled a public health emergency of international concern. He stressed that the virus is both highly contagious and extremely dangerous, warning that protection depends less on medical systems and more on personal vigilance and genuine care for one's own well-being.
While the official stopped short of issuing a full ban, his message was clear: exotic travel can wait. The advice comes as health authorities worldwide step up monitoring and containment efforts in affected regions. For now, Onishchenko recommends staying closer to home, where the threat is far lower.
