Russian Embassy Warns Tourists to Avoid Jalisco Amid Cartel Violence
MEXICO CITY, Feb 23 – The Russian Embassy in Mexico has issued a stark warning to its citizens, urging them to postpone any travel plans to the state of Jalisco. The advisory follows a wave of violent unrest triggered by the death of a major cartel leader.
In a statement on its Telegram channel, the embassy called on Russian nationals already in the region to take immediate precautions. They are advised to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, avoid crowds and potential targets, and closely follow official instructions from local authorities.
The turmoil erupted after Mexico's Defense Ministry announced the death of Ruben Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as 'El Mencho,' leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. He reportedly died from wounds sustained during an army operation to capture him. In the hours that followed, gangs retaliated with coordinated attacks across at least eight states, setting vehicles ablaze, blocking highways, and assaulting security forces.
The embassy's warning highlights the severe and unpredictable security situation. For now, the popular tourist destinations within Jalisco, including parts of the coastline, are considered high-risk areas. The diplomatic mission stressed the importance of heeding local curfews and restrictions as the government works to restore order.
