Russian Couples Say 'I Do' to Destination Weddings

Forget the local registry office. A growing number of Russian newlyweds are choosing to exchange vows far from home, fueling a robust trend in wedding tourism. Industry reports indicate this niche travel segment has grown by at least 15% over the past year, with agencies now specializing in complete overseas wedding packages.
The appeal is multifaceted. Couples cite the desire for a unique experience, often in a reliably warm climate with picturesque scenery, as a primary driver. Popular destinations include Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Mauritius, and the Caribbean. The packages streamline the entire process, handling legal paperwork, venue booking, photography, and guest accommodation, which often includes securing visas.
This trend reflects a broader shift in priorities. "It's about creating a lasting memory, not just a one-day event," explains Elena Sokolova, a Moscow-based wedding planner. "Clients want to combine the ceremony with a honeymoon, offering a celebration for themselves and a mini-vacation for close family and friends who attend."
The economic aspect is also significant. For many, a well-organized destination wedding can be comparable in cost to a large traditional reception in a major Russian city. With the logistics managed by professionals, couples report less stress, allowing them to focus on the celebration itself. As one recent bride noted, 'We got married on a beach at sunset. It was perfect, and our closest people were there to share it with us.'
