Russian Blogger's Sri Lanka Surprise: Empty Beaches, Spotty Wi-Fi, and Perfect Pineapples

Travel blogger Sasha Konovalova recently shared her first impressions of Sri Lanka, painting a picture that surprised many of her readers. Writing on her personal Zen platform blog, Konovalova described a destination that defied her expectations.

Arriving in February, the peak of tourist season, she was struck by the emptiness. The resort towns of Bentota and Beruwela offered vast, quiet stretches of sand. Even in the more popular Unawatuna, she found far fewer visitors than anticipated.

Another immediate challenge was connectivity. "We Russians are spoiled with high-speed internet," Konovalova wrote. "In Sri Lanka, I simply didn't have the patience to use it actively." While some hotels offered passable service, she found the speeds consistently frustrating.

Her culinary review was mixed. She lamented the coffee, describing even offerings at five-star hotels as "water with a coffee aroma." Yet the local markets provided a bright spot. She was delighted by fruit prices, paying the equivalent of 50-100 rubles per kilo for exotic varieties. A long-awaited taste of soursop, a fruit the size of four apples, cost her just 70 rubles.

A final, unexpected pleasure was the language. Konovalova noted how well many Sri Lankans she met spoke Russian, even mastering the language's tricky sibilant sounds. Her experience stands in contrast to another recent account from a Russian tourist, who criticized the behavior of some fellow vacationers on the island.
