Russian Blogger in U.S. Observes a Culture Free From Social Judgment

Travel blogger Alexander, journeying across the United States, has shared a pointed observation about American life that he finds both admirable and frustrating. In a post for his personal blog '#делайчехочешь' on the Yandex Zen platform, he described a national trait he says is almost entirely absent in his home country: a profound indifference to public opinion.

Alexander noted that in Russia, a man shopping in pajamas and slippers would be the talk of the town. In America, he claims, such a sight draws no attention. "Americans don't live with the constant thought: 'What will people think?'," he wrote. He described the absence of an internal censor that, in his view, automatically activates for Russians, worrying about judgment or misunderstanding.

The blogger attributes this attitude to an upbringing that encourages individualism from childhood. Americans, he suggests, are taught to 'be themselves' rather than conform to external expectations. However, he couples this observation with a caveat. This freedom from social scrutiny, he argues, is balanced by a tangible fear of legal accountability. "What matters to them isn't what you think, but what they can be held liable for. You can look however you want, but if you break the law—then everyone will care," Alexander concluded.

In a previous post, the blogger offered a more critical take on specific U.S. statutes, famously describing Maryland state laws as a 'circus without horses,' citing the official prohibition on bringing a lion into a movie theater.
