Russia and China Set for 60% Surge in Tourist Traffic by 2026

Tourist travel between Russia and China is projected to jump by 60% in 2026, reaching 4 to 4.5 million trips, according to Nikita Kondratiev, director of the multilateral economic cooperation department at Russia's Ministry of Economic Development. The forecast signals a strong rebound in cross-border tourism, driven by easing travel restrictions and growing demand.
In a move to further boost visitor numbers, Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree extending visa-free entry for Chinese citizens through December 31, 2027. The policy, already in effect, allows Chinese tourists to visit Russia without the usual paperwork, making trips simpler and faster. Industry experts say this extension is a key factor in the predicted growth.
The expected increase comes as both countries work to strengthen economic and cultural ties. For travelers, this means more flight options, streamlined border procedures, and a wider range of tour packages. With the visa-free policy locked in for another three years, Russian and Chinese tourism operators are already preparing for a busy 2026 season.
