Rock Hall Induction Ceremonies to Visit Cleveland Less Often Under New Proposal

Cleveland may soon see the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony even less frequently than it does now. A resolution approved Monday by a Cuyahoga County Council committee would shift the event to Cleveland only once every three years, scaling back from the current agreement that brought it here every other year.

Rock Hall CEO Greg Harris told the committee that costs for the ceremony have surged 68 percent since the 2019 deal, which was signed just before the pandemic. He noted that in practice, the ceremony has already been held in Cleveland every three years for the past decade—2012, 2015, 2018, 2021, 2024, and the next scheduled for 2027. Other years, the event has taken place in New York or Los Angeles.

Under the proposed change, county funds designated for the ceremony must be used every three years. If not, the Rock Hall would face a fine, with some money returning to the county. The resolution now heads to the full county council for a vote.

For Cleveland, which proudly calls itself the home of rock and roll, the change means fewer chances to host the annual celebration of music legends. But officials say the new schedule better reflects the reality of production costs and the event’s national reach.
