Reimagining the World Through Lens: PhotoEspaña 2026

This month, Madrid played host to the official opening of PhotoEspaña, Spain's premier photography festival. By September, nearly 100 exhibitions will have showcased the work of over 300 visual artists across the country. The festival's theme, 'Reimagining', brings together a diverse range of photographers, from established figures to emerging talent. One of the highlights is an exhibition dedicated to the work of Mexican photographer Alejandro Cartagena, whose series on the US-Mexico border offers a powerful commentary on the effects of separation. Cartagena's photographs capture the physical and emotional impact of the border wall, which he describes as a potent symbol of division. In contrast, Laia Abril's intimate portraits of individuals living with endometriosis offer a deeply personal and emotional exploration of the condition. Her life-size photographs, taken from above, visualize the debilitating effects of the disease and the various postures her subjects adopt to manage their pain. The festival also features a retrospective of the work of Dutch photographer Viviane Sassen, whose eclectic style defies easy categorization. Sassen's photographs explore themes of death, sexuality, and mourning, often on ambiguous terms. Meanwhile, Polish photographer Rafal Milach's exhibition takes a more strident approach, using documentary photography to explore social and political tensions in Poland and eastern Europe. Through his Archive of Public Protests, Milach aims to make his work accessible to new audiences and strengthen solidarity networks. Other exhibitions at PhotoEspaña include a group show featuring 13 accomplished projects, each exploring varied approaches to photography. From Txema Salvans' caustic look at life on the road to Aleix Plademunt's evocative photographs of the Peruvian rainforest, the festival offers a rich and diverse range of perspectives. With its theme of 'Reimagining', PhotoEspaña 2026 invites visitors to see the world in a new light, through the lens of some of the most innovative and thought-provoking photographers working today.
