Range Rover Discounts Plummet 60% in China as EV Demand Soars

CarscoopsSunday, June 21, 2026

A staggering discount of nearly 60% on a Range Rover in China has highlighted the challenges faced by automakers in navigating the shift to electric vehicles. According to a report, a locally built Range Rover Evoque L is being sold for as little as $26,600, a significant drop from its official list price of $63,500. This drastic price cut is not an isolated incident, as data shows that discounts on gasoline-powered cars in China have been rising sharply since January. The average discount on such vehicles has reached $4,900, nearly double the amount from the previous year. In contrast, electric and hybrid vehicles are holding their value much better, reflecting the rapid adoption of electrified vehicles in the Chinese market. Meanwhile, in the US, Jaguar Land Rover has announced plans to offer a hybrid option for its new compact Defender, despite initially conceiving it as an electric-only vehicle. This move is seen as a response to disappointing EV sales in America, where many customers remain hesitant to switch to fully electric vehicles. The contrasting trends in China and the US underscore the difficulties faced by global automakers in balancing their product offerings to meet varying market demands. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, companies like Jaguar Land Rover must navigate this complex landscape to remain competitive. The situation has also had a significant impact on the used-car market in China, where resale values of gasoline-powered vehicles have fallen sharply. In May alone, the average transaction price of such vehicles dropped by 19%, with a typical three-year-old used car now worth only 38% of its original value. This has created a vicious cycle, making buyers increasingly wary of purchasing another gasoline vehicle.
