Qatar Opens Decade-Long Doors to Global Business Leaders

Qatar has introduced a new long-term residency program designed to attract established international business leaders and founders. Announced by Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, the initiative offers two distinct 10-year pathways for foreign professionals.

The first is for entrepreneurs. To qualify, applicants must secure backing from a local incubator and demonstrate they have held at least 36,500 Qatari Riyals (approximately $10,000) in their account for three months. Successful candidates gain more than just residency; they receive mentorship, help navigating government procedures, healthcare, and access to discounts that can reduce living costs by a fifth.

The second pathway targets high-level executives already working in Qatar under a standard permit. It requires a monthly salary of at least 80,000 QAR (about $22,000) for executive directors, or 50,000 QAR (roughly $13,700) for C-suite roles like CEO or CFO. Applicants need five years of experience in that position and a nomination from their employer, which must be a significant entity like a publicly traded company or a bank. Benefits include the right to sponsor household staff and to establish a personal business in the country.

This visa launch aligns with a separate government move to inject an extra $2 billion into its "Fund of Funds" venture capital program, targeting technology, healthcare, and real estate. Together, these steps underscore a clear strategy to draw skilled professionals and diversify the nation's economic foundations.

For those not eligible under these categories, Qatar continues to offer residency through real estate investment, requiring purchases of $1 million or more for full benefits. The move places Qatar in direct competition with regional rivals like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which offer similar five-year programs for entrepreneurs.
