Psychologist warns US windowless plane project could raise anxiety and trigger panic attacks

A clinical psychologist at the European Medical Center, Luiza Istomina, said flying in a passenger plane without windows could increase anxiety and provoke panic attacks, even among people who have not previously dealt with a fear of flying.

The plane, being developed by US company JetZero, is designed to replace traditional portholes with digital screens, a change the company says could improve aerodynamics. But Istomina argued that losing a visual link to the outside world may create a sense of derealization, making the cabin feel like an isolated capsule.

She also warned that virtual windows could cause problems if images lag or flicker, confusing the brain and intensifying inner tension. Those most at risk include passengers with diagnosed claustrophobia, high personal anxiety, vestibular disorders, and older people, who may find it harder to adapt during long flights.
