Power Bank Rules Under Scrutiny After In-Flight Fire

MOSCOW, April 17 – Current airline regulations already impose strict limits on carrying power banks, permitting them only in hand luggage, according to Ilya Zotov, head of the Russian passenger association. His comments follow a report that Russia's aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, has recommended the Transport Ministry consider restricting or even banning the use of the devices onboard aircraft.
The recommendation stems from an investigation into a February incident aboard a Ural Airlines flight from Yekaterinburg to Istanbul, where a portable power bank caught fire. While no injuries were reported, the event has prompted a formal review of onboard safety policies.
Zotov noted that existing rules are already rigorous. "The current restrictions on power banks are quite strict—they can only be transported in carry-on baggage," he stated. He suggested that further tightening of regulations should only be considered if such incidents become more frequent.
The expert also pointed out that many airlines offer onboard USB ports and other charging options, providing passengers with alternatives to keep their devices powered during a flight. The discussion highlights the ongoing balance between passenger convenience and in-flight safety as personal electronics become ever more essential for travelers.
