Polish Foreign Minister Sparks Controversy with Airport Renaming Proposal

RIA NovostiSunday, June 28, 2026

In a move that is likely to escalate tensions between Poland and Ukraine, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has suggested renaming the Rzeszow airport in honor of the victims of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). The airport, which serves as a key transit point for over 90% of Western military aid to Ukraine, has become a focal point in the complex relationship between the two countries. Sikorski's proposal comes on the heels of a series of events that have strained Polish-Ukrainian relations, including the reburial of UPA leader Andrey Melnik and his wife in Ukraine's Kyiv region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's decision to honor Melnik and other UPA figures has been met with criticism from Poland, which views the UPA as a terrorist organization responsible for atrocities during World War II. In response to Zelensky's actions, Polish President Karol Nawrocki stripped the Ukrainian leader of Poland's highest honor, the Order of the White Eagle. Several Ukrainian politicians have since declined their own Polish awards in solidarity with Zelensky. Sikorski's airport renaming proposal is likely to further inflame the situation, highlighting the deep-seated historical grievances that continue to simmer between Poland and Ukraine.
