Plaza Hotel to Shut Down in 2027 for Multi-Year Facade Restoration
The Plaza Hotel in New York City will close in January 2027 for at least four years to undergo extensive restoration of its landmark-protected facade, operator Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has announced.
If the work finishes on schedule, the property would stay shuttered until 2031, though no reopening date has been set. Fairmont declined to comment.
The shutdown will take in the hotel's 282 guest rooms, its event spaces and the Palm Court restaurant, all expected to close in January, according to The New York Times. The building also holds 181 condominium units, and it is not yet clear whether residents will be affected.
Opened in 1907 at Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, the 18-story Plaza was designed by architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh in French Renaissance style and became a city landmark in 1969. It has appeared in films including North by Northwest, The Way We Were, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and Eloise at the Plaza. President Donald Trump owned the hotel from 1988 to 1995.
The Plaza previously closed in 2005 for a renovation that turned many original guest rooms into private residences, reopening in 2008.
