Plaza Hotel to Close for Four-Year Facade Renovation in 2027

The Plaza Hotel, an eighteen-story landmark at 59th Street and 5th Avenue near Central Park, will shut its doors starting in 2027 for a four-year renovation of its marble facade.

First designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh in 1907, the hotel's rusticated marble base deteriorates faster than its polished upper levels. The work comes just 19 years after the last major renovation in 2008.

The building is a registered landmark nationally and by the city, so the Landmarks Preservation Commission is working closely with the hotel. "Its grand, public interiors have made it an enduring part of the city's cultural identity for more than a century," said Courtney Metakis of the commission.

ADP Architects, which handled the previous interior renovation, has been enlisted, while HLZAE will oversee masonry restoration. Management said the project requires detailed planning and coordination with stakeholders.

The closure has disrupted long-term plans, including a booked wedding, and the hotel is working with the Hotel & Gaming Trades Council to place its 378 staffers in interim jobs.

The Plaza hosted The Beatles before their Ed Sullivan Show performance and welcomed F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. Zelda Fitzgerald died in 1948.
